Modern Times Group MTG AB (publ.) (‘MTG’ or ‘the Group’), the international entertainment broadcasting group, today announced that it has launched a national terrestrial TV channel in Ghana in West Africa. The new channel is called Viasat1 and is Viasat Broadcasting’s first TV commercial free-to-air entertainment channel outside Europe.
The launch of Viasat1, a broad-based entertainment channel featuring a combination of international movies and series, commenced at 18.00 Ghanaian time on Friday 12 December with the movie “Duma”, about an orphaned cheetah that becomes the best friend and pet of a young boy living in South Africa, followed by “The Cosby Show”, “Friends”, “CSI Las Vegas” and the Kevin Costner, Whitney Houston hit movie “The Bodyguard”.
Ghana has a population of over 23 million people and in 1957 it was the first sub-Saharan country to gain its independence. Ghana is one of Africa’s fastest growing economies and generated 6.8% GDP growth in 2007. The gross value of the Ghanaian TV advertising market is estimated to have been approximately USD 47 million in 2007, which represented close to 60% of the total advertising market value. The market has been growing by more than 30% per annum in recent years.
Viasat Broadcasting was awarded a five year national terrestrial TV license by the National Communications Authority of the Republic of Ghana in December 2007. The channel has been built up from the ground during 2008, with the development of everything from transmission towers to play-out facilities in capital city Accra. There are four other main terrestrial TV channels broadcasting in Ghana – GTV (State-owned), Metro TV (joint venture between the State and a Ghanaian private enterprise), TV3 (owned by TV3 of Malaysia and its local partners), and TV Africa (owned by a Ghanaian film maker).

I set up my new HD LCD widescreen TV on 28 November, 2008. As I scanned for the known stations, there displayed a blank station with a circular, green in-fill and a bold 1 in the middle and viasat in the 4th quadrant. Though there were no pictures then, I toggled to this stored channel every evening,on regularly basis, until the evening of 12/12/08 when I was flabbergasted with crispy pictures and stunning quality sound! I had never before experienced such clarity in any free-to-air TV reception. Viasat1 presents me the clearest pictures and best audio quality on my 37″ LCD 16×9 widescreen TV working in tandem with its home theatre surround system .
Albeit I am fastidious and insatiable when it comes to video and audio entertain at home, Viasat1 has met my requirement.

It is a great news viasat 1 is sending out its signals in cape coast,but the sad thing is its looks like the signal is available in 1 of every 10 household. I have tried retuning and turning around the antenna but still do not get the signals. That is the same story those I have inquire of about viasat 1 are telling me. I really enjoy watching Viasat 1. I like your focus yet I’m afraid you might be tempted to incorporate some of the low quality boring local shows we have in Ghana. Most stations start by showing interesting programs which draws viewers attention to them but soon conform to the very things viewers were trying to avoid by watching their station. Please stay focused so that some of us can watch TV.

Hey just wanted to say, Ghana really loves your stuff, keep it up. But I’ve got a few suggestions:
1. annihilate the ghanaian/nigerian movies, they’re terrible, besides if we wanted to see them we’d tune to any of the other available channels.
2.CSI:LV, i just got hooked, wish it didn’t have to go, but CSI: Miami /Bones is pretty good to, so bring more crime shows in the conduit of Cold Case, Without A Trace. And if you really wanted your ratings at all time highs, you’d bring serial dramas like Prison Break, Lost, Heroes, those would be killer awesome. And if possible show disney shows on weekend mornings, eg. kim possible, power rangers, recess etc
3. Stop repeating the same episodes.
4. Show music videos.
This is just my opinion of what I’d like to see, hope you get a chance to read and are convinced & hope you’re programming gets better with time, its such a relief from all the unfortunately low-quality crap we’re used to seeing on other channels. So in that regards, A big thank you!!!

Geesh! all this talk about Viasat 1 may have gotten me over expectant but God knows your transmission is not so good giving the hype you have received from the Ghanaian community. I insist that if you want to do something , you either do it right or dont do it at all. We dont need another tv station as porous as the already existing ones available. Furthermore, if you cant continue providing freetv, I’d advice you go to paytv before you lose your viewership. I think you currently have a sizeable audience who would readily buy your decoder if you turn paytv. For a public figure like myself, I cant go out into shops to buy porn movies and magazines. Thats why I like DSTV because some channels show afew boobs and ass ocassionally. actionX is extremely good at sex movies. But it wont be bad if VIASAT could set the pace by showing mature content late at night for Ghanaians who cannot afford DSTV like me. You know, not everyone was born with a silver spoon on his tongue. Thats why in 2012, you need to vote for me to make every Ghanaian financially capable of buying his own porn. but till then, VIASAT, please come to the rescue.

I have loved Viasat1 since the day it was broadcasted in kumasi. I never go a day without watching CSI Las vegas or Miami. The sound quality and picture quality is uncomparable.
The only problem is that the broadcast has been cut off for some time now. Its so sad because at when i tune in to watch my favorite CSI programme It jsut gives me a blank screen.
I have to bear to turn over to the other stations with nothing particularly interesting to watch.
Please look into this issue for us in Kumasi. I think it may be cutting across Ashanti and beyond.
Normally Accra doesn’t surfer these issues.

I love viasat1.In fact i love it so much i’ve put it on 1 on my channel list for terrestrial channels albeit there’s a little problem i think you should look at.For weeks now the sound has some slight noise in the background.Its not really noticable but it gets irritating in quiet scenes in movies especially when the volume is turned up a notch.I think that if its fixed it’ll benefit us all.But apart from that you’re the best crystal clear highQ picture and sound channel in Accra.Nothing comes close!! to our number 1 entertainer.

I’ve been thinking and i’m looking to see if viasat 1 with its wonderful picture and sound quality could set the stage for real digital terrestrial broadcasts.Since in recent times ghanaians have become more sophisticated with 3 out of 8 ghanaian households having a tv with digital channel reception capabilties.I believe viasat1 can open the way the DVB-T or another popular digital platform.broadcasts.I think that analog viasat 1 could be simulcast with digital viasat1 or the digital having special exclusive shows or a timeshift with the digital version of the channel naturally having superior picture quality and real stereo surround sound.I’m saying this because we down in Africa have been left in the dust in terms of tv broadcasting technology advancements now the standard catching on globally is has the ubiquitious tag HD.Which is ahead of digital terrestrial tech or built around it.Meaning we are 2! steps back so i believe if one prominent highQ channel starts the digital trend i believe that other channels will follow so as to close the splitting gap.For those who dont know Advantages of digital terrestrial broadcast include superior sound and picture quality comparable to satellite tv.Nothing like picture noise to worry about and if the strength and quality bars are more than say 60% you’ve nothing to worry about whether sound quality or picture.Just to mention a few.I believe strongly that if viasat1 undertakes this expensive yet rewarding endeavour you’ll make history and revolutionalize the phrase Local Television.LONG LIVE VIASAT1!! LONG LIVE GH!!

the funny movies am talking of are: the mask, yes men, dumb and dumber and any other funny movies.

Believe you me, it makes commercial sense too. Don’t forget that most of the Mining Giants are sited in the districts…eg. Bibiani, Awaso, Obuasi etc.

first of all i will like to thank u for bringing this extra ordinary channel to ghana.honestly,just b4 u arrived in ghana,i wanted to go and buy a decoder because watching tv was so boring for me.all the channels who existed aired only boring programs.they all had one way style of programming.who needs a decoder when he can watch quality programs free of charge on viasat1.i watch a lot of your programs but i watch all your programs from 7pm to 12 midnight.talk of programs like mr.cooper,bernie mac,cosby,csi and movies at 10.friends is my favourite program and it hurts me a lot if i miss an episode.your picture quality is perfect but the only problem i have with u sometimes is the sound.sometimes your sound has some background noise.i hope u will check it.you have achieved a lot in less than one year since u started operations.that is something most of the tv channels in ghana havent been able to do in their life time.i will like to know if u will switch from analogue to digital transmission in the near future.also,plz dont change your style of programming,u are the only tv channel who shows at least one hollwood movie daily and i love it so very much.those who dont like your programs are those who cant speak any english cos all your programs are in english.the live broadcast of the english barclays premier league and the uefa champions league has also increased your ratings in ghana.you are the number channel in ghana no one comes close to you.plz continue like this.during the broadcast of live matches by your channel,about 85% of people watching tv watch your channel.here are some few changes i will like to see on your channel.it seems your are bringing back some of the old series we have already seen.series like yearning for your love,mr.cooper,csi las vegas,baldwin hills,college hills,americas next top model,etc.plz bring us new series.again plz add horror movies to the movies at 10 and also some funny movies.the movie rat race which u showed last time are the type of funny movies we will like to see.also the movie splinter which u showed is another fine movie.childrens programs like captain planet,johnny bravo,the mask(animated),scooby doo(animated),power rangers(series),etc.it seems am writing too much.see ya.VIASAT 1 ,MY NUMBER ENTERTAINER.

Hi, i just like to say that you are doing a great job, its fantastic to have a purely entertainment station, i really enjoy watching viasat although i still dont get the idea behind the repetition of moves over and over again when there are tons of movies out there, especially the ones i classify as boring, also science fiction movies for kids are shown at 10pm when almost all kids are sleeping and it makes me wonder why such movie is being shown at that time when viewers are way above the age of 18yrs. if there is any possibility of these things being checked it will be great not to watch a movie more than twice in a month. hey do you guys read our posts? cuz we never know and it feels like writing to air! please give some feedback somehow, it really bothers me everytime i come hear to write my opinion and it feels like it will not be read at all.
also i hate that when it rains we lose you signal, it unfortunately speaks volumes of the technology you use, i also dislike it when you repeat shows, eg. oprah is never a current recording.
i dont mean to bash you or anything, you’re a real fantastic channel, just please fix these few issues and i along with others will be satisfied.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again! You can’t be an entertainer without music! YOU NEED TO SHOW THE LATEST FOREIGN & LOCAL MUSIC VIDEOS!! or either telecast a show that does that!
Secondly, i dont like the way u show a crime/detective series everyday (Mon – Fri. & Sun: CSI, and Sat: Bones)
I love CSI but there are a variety of tv shows out there which you could telecast, so please dont stick to crime series only.
Finally, those short clips like Bernard, just for laughs etc are not in any way funny.. and I humbly suggest that music videos should be telecast during the time slot in between shows.

my family and i are great funs of viasat 1 we love your programes very much especially your sitcoms but recently youv’e brought a new telenovela called tormenta en el parasio and we love it very much but since today 08/02/10 we have not been able to watch because my siblings & i have to go to school and my parents have to go to work we all arrive home latest by 4-30pm and we leave the house around 6-30am so please can you change the time you show it maybe you can show it some where in the evening from 6-00 pm or anytime your choice but not the time you currently showing it if you grant this request for my & i we would be forever greatful.THANK YOU.
